
Prednisolone
Deltasone is a brand name for the drug predisone, in the steroid classification of drugs. It is used to reduce swelling, but also lowers the immune system. It comes in tablets and is prescribed for several different problems. These can include endocrine disorders when the body does not produce enough of its own prednisone, rheumatic disorders such as arthritis, collagen diseases, dermatologic diseases such as severe psoriasis, allergies, ophthalmic disorders, respiratory disorders, hematologic disorders, neoplastic diseases, edematous states, gastrointestinal diseases such as ulcerative colitis, asthma, lupus, and nervous system disorders, especially those associated with flare-ups of multiple sclerosis.
SIDE EFFECTS:
Hot flashes, sweating, headache, increased appetite, nausea/stomach upset, or tiredness may occur. If any of these effects persist or worsen, notify your doctor promptly. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these serious side effects occur: stomach/intestinal pain, trouble breathing, swelling, rash, weak/thinning skin, unusual weight gain. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these unlikely but serious side effects occur: changes in vision, persistent sore throat or fever, change in amount of urine. Tell your doctor immediately if any of these highly unlikely but very serious side effects occur: mental/mood changes, seizures, yellowing eyes or skin, dark urine. Contact your doctor if you experience any of the signs of low steroid levels, such as: unusual weakness, weight loss, severe nausea/vomiting, fainting, dizziness. If you notice other effects not listed above, contact your doctor or pharmacist.
Prednisolone is used for:
Treating allergies, arthritis, breathing problems (eg, asthma), certain blood disorders, collagen diseases (eg, lupus), certain eye diseases (eg, keratitis), cancer (eg, leukemia), endocrine problems (eg, adrenocortical insufficiency), intestinal problems (eg, ulcerative colitis), swelling due to certain conditions, or skin conditions (eg, psoriasis). It may also be used for other conditions as determined by your doctor.
Prednisolone is a corticosteroid. It works by modifying the body's immune response to various conditions and decreasing inflammation.
DOSING
In the treatment of acute exacerbations of multiple sclerosis, daily doses of 200 mg of prednisolone for a week followed by 80 mg every other day or 4 to 8 mg dexamethasone every other day for one month have been shown to be effective.
In pediatric patients, the initial dose of prednisolone sodium phosphate, USP, oral solution may vary depending on the specific disease entity being treated. The range of initial doses is 0.14 to 2 mg/kg/day in three or four divided doses (4 to 60 mg/m2bsa/day).
